Gaylord Barragan: Protein, I would think, is essential to health. I'm no nutritionist, but protein sounds like something you can't go without. There *is* such a thing as too much protein. I heard about it on a survival show that warned that eating nothing but rabbit, a very lean animal with zero fat and lots of protein, can leave your body starved for other nutrients.Fad diets, I think, are things that should be avoided. Randomly experimenting with eating nothing of this and a whole lot of that doesn't seem like the kind of thing that could have a good success rate. There actually isn't a whole lot of reliable evidence for the benefits of such-and-such diets. Such things are hard to test because there's so many variables, and it's difficult to look for the Placebo effect because you can't disguise a food as a different food the way you can with pills.I'd suggest checking out an article in the newest issue of Skeptic magazine called "The Gospel of Food: The Myth of the Doctr! ine of Naught". The author suggest that, at least until more research can be done, probably the best thing you can do is eat a variety, so don't stop eating x all together and substitute it for eating twice as much of y....Show more
Bethanie Menden: there are 3 essential nutrients the body needs, carbohydrates, proteins and fats (the fourth nutrient is alcohol, but its not "essential"). the body can create its own carbohydrates from other nutrients, the process is called glyconeogenesis (GLYCO (sugar) NEO (new) GENESIS (create)) this way, on a low carbohydrate high protein diet, the body creates the carbohydrates it needs from the protein. the body cannot create proteins from carbohydrates (a carbohydrate is oxygen, carbon and hydrogen atoms) as the protein needs amino acids to be considered a protein. (protein also has carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms, which is why the body can create carbohydrates from it)as all nutrients are essential, the elimination of protein f! rom a diet is not good because the body cannot create it from ! the other nutrient intake, but it can create carbohydrates, which is why low carbohydrate diets can exist. =)...Show more

Rosie Travino: The low protein diet esxists, but it is used for therapeutic purpouses. Protein contains 16% nitrogen which the body eliminates in the urine as urea. In cases where liver or kidney function is impaired, ammonia or toxic nitrogen metabolites may build up in the blood. These toxins contribute to kidney disease and may produce behavioral changes such as delusions, psychosis and hallucinations. The Low Protein Diet is designed to reduce these nitrogen metabolites and ammonia in individuals with toxic bowel, ! liver disease or kidney failure. In order to achieve these objectives, dietary protein must be limited to 0.6 gram/kg (2.2 lbs) of body weight or about 40 to 50 grams per day.The Protein Restricted Diet is useful for the management of liver and chronic kidney diseases. For optimal results protein-rich foods should be consumed throughout the day rather than at one meal.It wouldn't so much work as a "loosing weight diet because of its negative sides. The Low Protein Diet is deficient in protein and can result in muscle wasting. This is a consequence of muscle protein being broken down to provide amino acids to the body for daily use. The result of this would be a general lowering of body metabolism, and piling up of weight when the diet is over. Moreover, substituting proteins with carb or fat-rich food, means an increased in the GI levels in the blood, increased production of insulin and, ultimately, more storage of fat. This diet may also be low in iron, calcium, thiamine (! Vitamin B-1), riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), and niacin (Vitamin B-3) and so! a nutritional supplement may be necessary to prevent deficiency....Show more
