Are public libraries bad for authors?

answers1: I don't know what you mean. If you mean their books being
in a public library is a bad thing, I would have to disagree. An
author's book(s) in a library would give patrons a chance to check the
book out before buying. Plus, word of mouth carries pretty well, and
after borrowing a book at no cost, enjoying it, and spreading the
word, this can improve sales. Another thing, the price of new books
is pretty expensive, and a lot of people will go to the library, and
if they really enjoy a book, will end up buying it later.

So, in answer to your question: no.

Edit: most people do not have enough money to buy a bunch of books
anyway. Libraries still get authors' names and books out there and
provide added publicity which can and does lead to more people buying
their books. The author does get more money because of libraries.
answers2: You get well known. You make people smarter who don't have
money and it helps the enviroment. You also get the satisfaction of
knowing your making a change. Helping the world. Eventually your books
will become popular and people will pay to buy them.
answers3: Why would they be? A wide range of people can read their
book and see if they like it. If they, they'll tell others about it.

What if you don't like a book? Are you going to spend all that money
on something and then want to return it because it sucks? What about
the author? Do they have to return the money they just got because
their book sucks? Or if the book is good, they can sell more books
because people will want their books and want more from them.

It's a way to test out the book. Why would it be bad for authors?
answers4: Libraries don't carry enough copies to stifle book sales.
Besides, I highly doubt that an author would want to limit their
exposure to the public by keeping their books out of libraries (not
that they have a choice).
answers5: Um... I don't think so... In what way?
answers6: No.
answers7: Not at all. While they don't make hardly anything from their
material that can be read at the library, their publicity skyrockets.
A lot of my favorite authors came to be my favorite because I picked
up something at the library, thought it was good and looked into the
author. Their new stuff gets more attention because the public library
patrons are often where their followers come from.
answers8: I've never been attacked by one...lol
answers9: That's almost like saying if you read a novel, you shouldn't
see the film based on it. I believe it's a win-win situation. The
established authors already have their fan-base so libraries carrying
their books wont hurt their sales and it gives emerging authors the
exposure they really need.
