Betsey Muehlbach: Dostoevsky is a fantastic choice. He is a Russian author/philosopher with several great books. I would recommend Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov.

Ilana Gaster: Les MiserableorThree MusketeersBoth French writers. Both classics. First one sounds like your list for preferences.
Denna Prudente: any book by Jules! Verne
Wilmer Skidmore: The Stranger by Albert Camus. I think he's French, but the story is in Algeria. Interesting psychology involved. Ambrose Mumma: Fyodor Dostoevsky is good. My favorite book by him is "The Brothers Karamazov". Another good author is Leo Tolstoy ("Anna Karenina"), as well as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn ("One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch"). I would also recommend the "Bridge on the Dr! ina", by Ivo Andric.
