Sharolyn Claybourn: go to collegeboard.com and do a search for colleges that have education as a major. there are a lot. if you want to be an elementary school teacher, major in elementary education. if you want to teach little ones, early childhood education is the way to go. if you want to teach high school, go with secondary education. you could probably also go with the subject you want to teach. you technically dont have to major in education to teach, but there will be tests you will have to take to be certified. there should also be extras to certify you in extra subjects. i personally am majoring in elementary ed, and will minor in math. i have to take a series of tests to be certified to teach in my state, and then i can take an extra one in math and pay a little extra to my college and then be certified to teach math, too, which will make me more marketable....Show more
Ronnie Panas: That seems a bit strange that these colleges only have minors in educatio! n. You should definitely go to collegeboard.com and search for schools that have education as a major. You technically don't have to major in education per se depending on the school, but you will need to take enough classes in education that you can pass the certification exam for your state. I'm not really sure that a minor in education would prepare you enough. To be a math teacher at the secondary level, you would either do your major in education and then take the required classes to become certified to teach math. The education program at your college will have all the guidelines of which courses you need to take and how many. Another option is to do a double major/dual degree and major in education AND math. This will probably be the better option if you can do it since it looks better to employers and if you decide teaching isn't for you, then you still have your math degree.I'm not 100% sure on requirements for elementary ed since I'm doing secondary educati! on myself, but look at the requirements for each school you're! interested in. Basically, every school has different requirements and a different program setup for education. Some require you to major in your subject area and then do the education classes later, others integrate both majors together. For example, my college has a school of education within it that we have to apply to separately. If admitted, you graduate after 5 years with your bachelors in your subject area, bachelors in education, teacher certification, and a completed masters in education. Go to the school websites and see what their requirements are--this is your best bet!!...Show more
Rick Duchane: You'll have to compare the different courses offered at different uni's/ colleges, 'cause every place offers a slightly different course.
