What inputs do I need for my Home Theater?

Rana Rudell: Ok... I need actual input/outputs... The TV is fine and has it all. The PS3 will go HDMI, but the Cable box has Red/White and the Xbox has red/white. What does my receiver/DVD player that comes with the home theater need to work with all that

Hong Hunkin: You'll need a TV that has HDMI inputs so it can get the HD signal from the PS3. You'll want to have an Optical cable for your home theater and you should look for a home theater receiver with an optical in. Also, component is good, but HDMI is the best.

Tamatha Neubaum: Your receiver should have stereo (red/white) inputs. If your are looking for Home-Theater-in-a-Box, you may find that the "receivers" that come with them are very limited in input/output capabilities for external devices. However, if you get a normal A/V receiver and provide your own speakers, you will find all types of I/O available, both for audio and video. The receiver will accept the stereo audio from the cable box and Xbo! x. It will also accept the video; use the highest-level video connection (best-to-worst: component, s-video, composite). Connect each type of receiver video output to the appropriate TV external input. You must switch the TV as well as the receiver to match the source. However, if you get a more advanced receiver, you can just use the HDMI output and the receiver will convert any of the incoming formats to HDMI....Show more
