global ---- warming ? ? ?

Coleman Petropoulos: For the record, this is for a debate. These are the arguments the negative side will use. I need good counter-arguments. And, unfortunately, these facts are correct (sources are legitimate). Even though I believe in AGW, the negative debaters are very good at picking sources.AGW, anthropogenic global warming, is the idea that man has caused the warming of the Earth. Obviously, recently, the average surface temperature of Earth has increased.HOWEVER, there are many other facts in the matter (these are the killer arguments the opposing team uses):1. Total ice mass in both the North and South pole have increased, although large ice slabs have been coming off. Even then, total ice mass still increases.2. The variations in temperature have been seen MANY times in Earth's history, sometimes larger and faster too. While global warming does, therefore, exist, there is doubt on whether or not it is man-made because such temperature fluctuations have been obser! ved in the past. (Past temperatures can be measured very accurately via ice samples, apparently, making this a legit source).3. There are two separate graphs following the increase of CO2 and temperature. Apparently the rise in CO2 *follows* the rise in temperature by hundreds of years, not vice versa. These are massive killer arguments. Of course, there are a few more. They have the sources which I will post as soon as I find them....Show more

Terresa Tsasie: Global warming is when the temperature around the world gets warmer. There's a natural cycle the earth has been going through for thousands of years. We have global warming for many years, and then it flips and in very quick order, we shift to global cooling which happens much faster than globalwarming, and it puts us into an ice age. Man does contribute to it, I'm sure, but we are not the largest contributors by far. There are people who believe global warming is a horrible thing and may destroy the earth, how! ever, it's simply a normal part of the weather cycle. They fo! rget that, by trying to have humans undo the global warming trents, they might just do enough to trigger us succenly diving into an ice age, which is the end result of global cooling.Mankind cannot control this totally, since it's not the only contributor, and we just don't have that kind of control over all the animals and plants that inhabit the earth. Right now there's a show on the History Channel you should all watch, and it's on "The Little Ice Age" -!-...Show more

Karl Jantzen: Not real.If all they have is CO2... consider that every bit of plant matter that grows is digested by an animal, insect or microbe and converted into CO2 and other "greenhouse gasses." By comparison, human contribution is utterly trivial. Then when plants are exposed to more CO2, they consume more... (CO2 generators are put into greenhouses to increase plant growth.) So it's simply impossible for us to have an even noticable effect on the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere....Show more

Also look at glaciers: http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu/sotc/images/glacier_...And Arctic sea ice extent: http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_im...2. No. The temperature has been very stable for the past 8000 years. We've actually been slowly cooling towards the next ice age. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Holocene_Tempera...There is no natural explanation for the current rapid warming. http://greenhome.huddler.com/wiki/global-warming-a...3. The lag time is only about 800 years, whereas the historical temperature rises took around 5000 years. Therefore CO2 could have contributed 5/6 of the warming period. It was what's known as a "feedback", not a forcing. http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004...It is extraordinarily clear that the! rise in temperatures is not causing the current rise in CO2. Several i! ndependent observations that confirm this can be found in Myth #15 below. http://greenhome.huddler.com/wiki/global-warming-m......Show more

Ronnie Sardi: Global climate is mainly driven by solar activity, not man-made activity which has little impact on the planet's temperatures. Solar activity is currently at a lull which means that the earth recently started cooling down again and many scientists predict a mini ice-age. While the talking heads on TV accuse you of being Hitler if you deny global warming we are having record lows in many regions around the world. Carbon dioxide does not drive climate change or global temperatures. Its a popular myth pushed by hypocritical gas-bag Al Gore and the many business' that stand to gain from carbon trading schemes designed to suck money from the poorest people on the planet which rarely goes into worth-while schemes such as reforestation, desalination or desert reclamation. The worst effect of human industrial activity is t! he real pollutants which we are breathing and eating every day. Many of which are even deliberately fed to us in our food and water. CO2 hype is just a distraction. The sun controls global temperatures. Break out your warmer clothes cause solar flares are at an all time low....Show more

Libby Berkovitch: I think it is true because deforestation is letting more CO2 into the atmosphere. This makes it harder for the crops to grow, because they are not used to the climate that they are experiencing. By dong this, there will be less crops and this will rise the price. To prove it as well is that natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, Landslides all of these which are getting more frequent due to Global Warming, these are causing crops to be distroyes and therefore pusing prices higher.

Isaias Badgley: yes it is true but only in some cases,1.bcoz of global warming the temp. is rising.2.due to this temp. increase the crop production is les! s.3.and hence Global warming is pushing crop prices higher.

Georg! ianna Zollo: It is false and obviously so. Those who suggest it has affected crop yeild are lying or simply ignorant (probably the latter). In fact warmth is generally good for plants assuming they have enough water. Cold is generally bad. Warming should increase yields if everything else is equal. Increased CO2 will allow plants to close their stomata earlier which lessens the amount of water they need. It is true that government intervention causes increased prices and reduced supplies but that doesn't mean warming is causing shortages.

Mahalia Brindle: Many things affect the price of food, deniers tried to single out the use of ethanol based fuels as the cause, will this did have a small effect so did several other things, chief amongst them is growing wealth in China, mean greater demand for better food.Tomcat posts a stat on global Wheat production 1996-2009In millions of metric tons 585.4-681.9 But human population is growing faster than that, in 1996 it w! as 5.7 billion in 2009 it was 6.8 billion, we are barely keeping up with demand, so anything that has even a small effect on availability is going to affect us all, to date I think AGW has had little effect but as the effects grow that will not continue to be the case. Then there's what happened to the corn price in 2008, without any drop in demand for corn based ethanol, which hardly suggests much of an effect, but that didn't stop denier sites continuing to bang the drum.http://uk.reuters.com/article/2008/10/23/food-corn...

Hans Sachetti: Global warming has been largely created by the actions of man and its time we re-looked at the way we consumed the earths resources. One of the earth’s resources especially under stress is water and it must be conserved now. There are many simple yet inexpensive things you can do about the house to save water, and keep your bills down. To read them visit http://www.bewaterwise.com/tips01.html

Rosio Pasculli: Easy.#1 is just ! plain false. Here is the northern hemisphere ice:http://nsidc.org/data! /seaice_index/images/n_plot.p...#2 is a logical fallacy. Of course there have been natural climate changes in the past. That doesn't tell us anything about the current climate change.Forest fires always happened naturally in the past. Does that mean humans can't cause forest fires?#3 simply ignores physics. CO2 is a greenhouse gas - if the amount in the atmosphere increases, it will cause the planet to warm. Again, this is basic physics. The fact that CO2 has lagged behind temperature in the past is because CO2 is also a feedback, meaning if something else causes the planet to warm, there are various feedbacks which will cause the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere to increase, and that CO2 will in turn cause the planet to warm.http://greenhome.huddler.com/wiki/global-warming-a...Very simple stuff. If the "judges" claim that data over time spans of less than 8,000 years are "irrelevant", then the debate is rigged anyway and you can't win. That's a load of garbage....Show! more

Emile Midgley:

Von Houskeeper: I don't think the answer can be distilled down to a simple true or false. In terms of yields, there were severe weather events that impacted and threaten to impact crop prices, but the proponents of AGW do not make the claim that single weather events can be attributed to AGW, only that long-term trends can. So you could have a season of severe drought in an area that could indeed impact crop prices, but you can't attribute that particular season of drought directly to AGW.That's one of the things that makes it trick-and we might even be able to say that the complexities and uncertainties on both sides of the debate are the reasons the issue has become so politicized. Anyway...theoretically, mankind's activities are believed to be one of the accelerating factors behind Arctic ic! e melting, and that in turn could affect thermohaline circulation, whic! h in turn could affect regional climate, which in turn could affect crop production, which in turn could affect prices. However, there are a lot of variables, and connecting the dots from AGW to higher crop prices now is tenuous at best. A bigger influence at this particular juncture would be commodity and futures traders buying and selling based on single or particular events that may impact supply. One might say that yes, these commodity traders are influenced by events that one believes are connected to AGW, but the fact of the matter is we are seeing weather patterns and climate change that may affect one region negatively, but by and large those negative impacts are being countered by record yields in other regions, either by favorable weather/climate changes or improving technology. In time to come, if global temperatures continue to increase-whether a natural process accelerated by mankind or not-and we see impacts such as desertification start to take over formerly fe! rtile regions-think about the midwestern U.S, among the most productive land in the entire world. Right now we got the best growing climate for our agricultural needs over the best land...what happens if sooner than we can adapt we have the best growing climate over the crappiest land? If the temperate zone most responsive to agriculture shifts northward to less arable land, we would certainly see an impact on total global production of crops. At that juncture we would be able to say inarguably that global warming-regardless of the cause-is indeed pushing crop prices higher.I'm not a scientist, but I do know agriculture and commodities.

Lissette Semon: It's a catch phrase for tax collection on the backs of gullible liberals who think they can stop the sun from creating a warmer planet.p.s. I think Angela is pretty much! representative of the whole alarmist movement, give her the best answe! r and the 10 points.

Irving Jordahl: Global warming (and cooling!) is happening right now. Here is truth about global warming:Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling. The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water. This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history). As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm). When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age. It's been happening for millions of years. The worrisome and brutal predicti! ons of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY. As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':Humans did not cause it.Humans cannot stop it....Show more

Paul Maymi: In 30-40 years, it is almost inevitable. Stephen Hacking even said so. Unless they ban burning fossil fuel except for maybe steel mills in America and other countries, were fu(ked.

Felicitas Phildor: Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century, and its projected continuation. The Earth's climate changes in response to external forcing, including variations in its orbit around the Sun (orbital forcing), changes in solar luminosity, volcanic eruptions, and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. ! The detailed causes of the recent warming remain an active field of res! earch, but the scientific consensus is that the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases due to human activity caused most of the warming observed since the start of the industrial era. This attribution is clearest for the most recent 50 years, for which the most detailed data are available. Some other hypotheses departing from the consensus view have been suggested to explain most of the temperature increase. One such hypothesis proposes that warming may be the result of variations in solar activity. None of the effects of forcing are instantaneous. The thermal inertia of the Earth's oceans and slow responses of other indirect effects mean that the Earth's current climate is not in equilibrium with the forcing imposed. Climate commitment studies indicate that even if greenhouse gases were stabilized at 2000 levels, a further warming of about 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) would still occur. ...Show more

Chr! isty Tirabassi: The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has a basic definition of climate change that I believe is a pretty good summary:"Climate change refers to a statistically significant variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, persisting for an extended period (typically decades or longer). Climate change may be due to natural internal processes or external forcings, or to persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or in land use."In other words, a long-term shift in the climatic trends of a region or the globe, depending on the scope you're looking at. As the IPCC points out, this could be due to natural causes or human-induced changes. Some natural causes would include:- changes in solar output (this could have a wide range of effects)- Milankovitch cycles (slow changes in the Earth's orbit and axial tilt)- excessive or very low volcanic activity- changes in surface albedo (amount of sunlight ref! lected back from Earth - higher albedo usually means cooler temperature! s)- shifts in the ability of oceans to circulate water north/south- a naturally changing greenhouse effectOn average, and respectively, the factors above induce these effects when increasing and the opposite when decreasing:- warming- (not really an increasing/decreasing type of factor)- cooling- cooling- warming- warmingThere could also be anthropogenic causes, mainly:- enhanced greenhouse effect- aerosol production (causes cooling)The current agreement among the vast majority of climate scientists is that the global warming (and the subsequent climate change) in the past century was largely attributable to human activities enhancing the planet's greenhouse effect, and in the past ~40 years almost entirely due to human emissions....Show more

The only way to get away with such absurdity by slapping some green paint on it, is by scaring people with some silly nonsense that the world is coming to an end due to AGW.
