It was immediately (during the serialization) acclaimed as the high water mark in superhero comics. The collected edition hasn't been out of print (to my knowledge)."Watchmen' is the only graphic novel on 'Time' magazine's 100 best novels list. 'Graphic novel' is sometimes misused (for lack of a better term) for any collected edition. This can work, but because comics are serialized, there is almost always some updating from last issue going on every issue, leading to plot redundancy in the collected work, ie, telling the (collected book) reader things which they already know. This doesn't occur in a true 'novel'. Gregg Hagge: DC Comics released it as a 12-issue series. Meaning it came out as 12 separate issues before being collected as a trade where all the issues are in one book. It IS a Comic book. Just nothing like Superman or Captain America. Watchmen was historical when it came to what a comic book was and what they could be.
